Tam Dalyell on Iran and the Caspian
In today's Independent Tam Dalyell writes about his recent holiday Iran, during which he went to Resht on the shore of the Caspian, which he describes as a freshwater sea. Evidently he didn't taste it or swim in it. I can testify from personal experience that it's pretty salty.
Actually, according to Wikipedia the mean salinity of the Caspian is one-third that of the oceans, but it varies according to where you sample it. In the north it is indeed fresh water, but near the Iranian coast it is more saline.
