From time to time someone emails me to ask for a PDF of some article that I've published. When I send it as requested I hardly ever get an acknowledgement of receipt. I know it doesn't cost me anything to email the PDF and it doesn't take long, provided I know where it is on my hard disk, but equally it wouldn't take long for the recipient to reply with a note of thanks. This is what I do myself when I ask a favour of this kind.

I'm beginning to think that in future I shall ignore such requests.

John Floyd on :

I too have serious concerns about upholding the principles of the enlightenment, especially here in the U.S., where the Christian Fundamentalist are increasing in political influence, if not in percentage of the population. They confuse "democracy" with our "republic" with laws that protect the minority from the "tyranny of the majority." They are working earnestly to move into the schools with pseudoscience and revisionist history (i.e. the U.S. was founded as a "Christian Nation"). To some extent this is countered by humanist and skeptical organizations. Unfortunately, few of the opponents have the political organization, money, passion, and aggression of the religious zealots. I used to think that for the most part these people were not well educated and perhaps of average or below intelligence, though I have been surprised that their ranks include many very intelligent people, including physicians.
