Return of our newts

For most of the last 24 years we have lived in north London our garden pond was home to a colony of breeding newts every Spring. Then for the last two years they all disappeared. Last autumn I cleared out a lot of dead leaves and other stuff from the bottom of the pond, thinking it might improve the water quality, and indeed the newts are back this year. Very welcome.
