Book review: Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium (Bart D.Ehrman)

As promised, I've now uploaded my review of this book. It presents a view of Jesus that will be unfamiliar to many Christians although Ehrman says that it is probably the prevailing orthodoxy among scholars today. In fact, it isn't new: it goes back as far as the eighteenth century and was first presented to a large audience by Albert Schweitzer in "The Quest for the Historical Jesus" in the early twentieth century.

I certainly find that it makes sense to me. Even as a boy I thought the natural interpretation of many of the sayings in the New Testament was that Jesus thought the end of the world was imminent, and it required a fair amount of intellectual contortions to understand them differently. Phrases such as "Son of Man" and "Kingdom of God" are obscure if not taken in this way.

I'd certainly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what the Gospels are really saying.
