I often disagree with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, but her article in today's Independent is spot on. Bishop Nazir-Ali claims that British values of respect for the dignity of all human beings, equality, and liberty derive from the Bible and Christianity. I would have said myself that they derive from the Enlightenment and in many ways arise from an oppositition to Christianity and from secularism. He said this on the Today programme this morning, when he also drew an distinction, which I don't understand, between religion and ideology. I'm not sure there is any difference myself.
