David Chalmer's Blog

David Chalmers's blog is well worth keeping an eye on. I followed a link there for 10 May and found two interesting articles on the question whether fish are conscious and can feel pain (they can’t, according to these papers, which is no doubt comforting for their authors if not for the fish). Chalmers also has a link to a website where you can fill in a on-line questionnaire to discover your world view. Chalmers found he was a post-modernist; I seem to be an existentialist, to my surprise.

Existentialism emphasizes human capability. There is no greater power interfering with life and thus it is up to us to make things happen. Sometimes considered a negative and depressing world view, your optimism towards human accomplishment is immense. Mankind is condemned to be free and must accept the responsibility.

My score:

Existentialist 81%, Modernist 75%, Materialist 75%, Postmodernist 63%, Cultural Creative 63%, Romanticist 31%, Fundamentalist(!) 19%, Ideallist 0%.

Not sure I’m that optimistic, actually.
