Do we need the arts?

Dylan Evans, whom I cited here a few weeks ago (5 May 2005), rejects religion and finds the meaning of life in art. He presumably wouldn’t agree with John Carey, who in his recent book What Good Are The Arts? puts forward the view that art appreciation is purely subjective and there are no independent criteria of judgement. “The idea that by calling something a work of art you are bestowing on it some divine sanction is now as intellectually respectable as a belief in pixies.” Read the review.
