Book review: Lucifer's Legacy: The meaning of asymmetry, by Frank Close

Symmetry is something we all understand intuitively, but the more we think about it the deeper the problems it raises appear. Asymmetry occurs when symmetry is broken; we often, perhaps, think of symmetry as perfection and asymmetry as a falling away from that ideal. Close's aim is to show that unless symmetry is broken nothing of importance can happen. But perhaps, he thinks, there is an ultimate symmetry at the source of existence from which all the asymmetries needed for life have emerged. Questions of this kind have up to now been in the domain of philosophy or theology, but they are now beginning to be answerable by science. [More]
