Book review: The Popes, by John Julius Norwich
The papacy has lasted for almost 2000 years and is as old as Christianity itself. Norwich describes it as "perhaps the most astonishing social, political, and spiritual institution ever created", and it is hard to disagree with this assessment. His history is written for the non-specialist reader, and he disarmingly disclaims any pretension to scholarship. That is, he does not claim to have contributed any new information that was not already known to scholars, but what he has done is equally valuable. He has provided a thoroughly readable and often entertaining account of his subject. His book, though long, is never tedious. [More]
