Death of grammar

In yesterday's episode of The Archers. Oliver Sterling, a country squire, Master of the Hunt and so forth, with a distinctly upper-class (indeed, semi-aristocratic) girl friend, came out with the line "Please leave it to Caroline and I". Do the writers of this programme really think someone like Oliver would say such a thing? Nearly caused me a relapse from my recent flu.
