CERN and the LHC

Today's Independent has a piece debating whether the Large Hadron Collider is a worthwhile use of resources. So far as I'm concerned the question should not even be asked. OF COURSE it is worth while! Whether it ever gives rise to any practical spinoffs for medicine or industry is entirely beside the point. What matters is that it will take us a step further on the perhaps never-ending path to understanding who and what we are and where we came from, something that religions have claimed, and failed, to do in the past. I'm very glad that I've lived long enough to see the launch of the project, and perhaps some of its findings to come.
